Note:
In my piece, "The Strange Myth of the Sisyphus Brothers", I seek to explore the
questions: What is Sisyphean in music? Can it manifest in sound? In actions?
In a state of mind? Is the Sisyphean experience of a performer something the
audience can feel? And if so, can the audience empathize with the performer, or
is it simply amusing to watch?
Inspired by the Greek myth of Sisyphus, the piece is written for a piano and
percussion duo. Unlike the mythological story, in this composition, there are
two characters—two performers—who engage in an extended and Sisyphean
struggle to become one entity, to play together most of the time with perfect
precision, and to execute actions in complete synchronicity. The Sisyphean
nature of the piece is expressed not only in the performers’ requirement to
maintain near-perfect unison for most of the piece but also in the persistent
insistence on staying within a particular sonic world—one that could be
considered narrow or lacking in richness.
